20th CENTURY WORLD HISTORY 12 RVS Semester 2

20th Century World History reflects on a century of conflict, development and change - both globally and in Canada - and offers students an in depth and critical reflection on the following themes: The rise and rule of authoritarian regimes: North Korea and the Kim Dynasty, China and Mao, Germany and Hitler, Italy and Mussolini. Civil wars, independence movements, and revolution: Soviet Union, China, Vietnam as well as Guerrilla warfare and decolonization movements.

Issues within human rights movements, including those of indigenous peoples: women’s rights, U.S. civil rights, apartheid. Religious, ethnic, and cultural conflicts including genocide: cultural genocide of indigenous peoples, the holocaust and separatist movements.

Topics include: Global conflicts, including World War I, World War II, and the Cold War: espionage, militarism, military technology and the nuclear arms race. Migrations, movements, and territorial boundaries: post-world war, the Middle East, Palestine/Jewish settlement as well as Canada and the USA. Social and cultural developments: the changing role of women, consumerism / capitalism and globalization.

 

20th Century World History 12 explores the major conflicts, movements, and transformations that shaped the modern world. Students critically examine global and Canadian history through themes such as authoritarianism, revolution, human rights, global conflict, social change, and the impact of technology and media on society.

20th Century World History 12 explores the major conflicts, movements, and transformations that shaped the modern world. Students critically examine global and Canadian history through themes such as authoritarianism, revolution, human rights, global conflict, social change, and the impact of technology and media on society.

Throughout the course students will engage through a variety of media including moodle-based self directed learning, large inquiry based projects, lecture, discussion and a final exam. This course also meets the Social Studies 11 BC graduation requirements.
